Anthropic Dispatch vs OpenClaw

Anthropic just released Dispatch, a mobile app that connects Claude directly to your phone. QR code, pairing, notifications, remote Mac control... If you use OpenClaw, you probably had the same reaction I did: "But that's exactly what we've been doing for months?"

I tested Dispatch live to see what it's really worth. Here's my full analysis.

What is Claude Dispatch?

Dispatch is an Anthropic companion app that lets you interact with Claude from your phone. The idea is simple: instead of opening claude.ai on mobile, you get a native app that connects to your Claude Code environment.

The setup is surprisingly clean:

  • You scan a QR code from the app
  • Pairing takes 30 seconds
  • You get notifications when Claude needs your attention
  • You can control your Mac remotely through Claude

What Works Well

  • The UX is polished - Anthropic knows how to build products. The interface is clean, pairing works on the first try
  • Notifications are relevant - no spam, you're notified when there's an action to approve
  • Remote control works - you can launch Claude Code tasks on your Mac from your phone

What's Problematic

The real issue isn't app quality. It's the closed approach:

AspectDispatchOpenClaw
Supported modelsClaude onlyAll (Claude, GPT, Gemini, Mistral, local...)
ChannelsDispatch appWhatsApp, Discord, Telegram, Signal, SMS...
CustomizationLimited100% modifiable (open source)
ProtocolProprietary AnthropicOpen, extensible
PriceIncluded in Claude subFree (open source)

Dispatch locks you into the Anthropic ecosystem. If tomorrow you want to use GPT-5, Gemini, or a local model, you're stuck. With OpenClaw, you change one config line.

My Verdict

Dispatch is the Apple of mobile agents: clean, well-finished, but limited and closed. OpenClaw is Linux: less pretty, but free and infinitely more flexible.

For someone who just wants to use Claude on their phone without hassle, Dispatch is perfect. For a developer who wants to control their stack, choose their models and customize every aspect, OpenClaw remains the reference.

The fundamental question: can a proprietary tool compete with an open system that supports all models, all channels, and that you can modify 100%?

My answer is no. Not in the long run.
